CFTR and cystic fibrosis: A major limitation of these novel pharmaceutical treatments for CF patients, such as the CFTR modulators, is the excessive costs when they reach the market (over US$250,000 per patient per year), which renders difficulties in their availability for many patients worldwide (O'Sullivan et al., 2013; Ferkol and Quinton, 2015; Orestein et al., 2015), especially for those living in low- and middle-income countries (Cohen-Cymberknoh et al., 2016).
