ELANE and infection: Interestingly, in agreement with our findings, these virulence molecules during the infection of neutrophils are also efficiently degraded by innate immune proteases, such as the neutrophil metalloproteinase-8 (Arnett et al., 2014) and neutrophil elastase (Weinrauch et al., 2002), respectively, highlighting the evolutionary relevance of this host-pathogen interactions.
