FASN and cancer: Phosphorylation of AMPK can facilitate the phosphorylation of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase-1 (ACC-1) to decrease the levels of fatty acid synthase (FASN), sterol-regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP-1c) and stearoyl coenzyme A desaturase-1 (SCD-1) [127,129], thereby impeding lipogenesis, a process needed for cancer cells to meet the excess nutritional requirements of sustained cancer cell growth and subsequent cancer cell proliferation.
