It has been found that pathways controlled by the primary cilium in early development such as sonic hedgehog (SHH) (Stott and Chuong, 1997) and WNT signaling (Stampella et al., 2017) are dysregulated in osteoarthritis, alluding to a role of an as of yet uncharacterized failure of ciliary function in the development of osteoarthritis. This evidence concerns the gene SHH and osteoarthritis.
