HMGB1 and Hepatic fibrosis: Moreover, HMGB1 has been proposed to play a direct role in promoting fibrosis in the liver, lungs, kidney, and heart through different pathways such as inflammation or myofibroblast activation.22, 23, 24 However, in liver fibrosis, hepatocyte‐derived HMGB1 is likely not involved in fibrogenesis as shown in recent studies,19, 20 excluding any potential role of HMGB1 as a DAMP in liver scarring progression implying that non‐parenchymal cells, such as macrophages, could be the cellular source of HMGB1 during tissue fibrosis development.
