MMP2 and neoplasm: Matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP‐2/‐9) have shown to be overexpressed in many types of tumors, and its cleavage sites have previously been used for the aforementioned purpose.9 Upregulation of MMP production during tumor progression is necessary for degrading basement membrane components which allow the tumors to grow, invade surrounding tissue, and metastasize.
