The Parkinson’s disease-associated mitochondrial serine protease HtrA2 downregulates the activity of NLRP3 and absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasomes by preventing the sustained accumulation of the inflammasome adaptor apoptosis-related speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), and thus, HtrA2 acts as a mitochondrial quality control element that keeps NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasomes tightly controlled (Rodrigue-Gervais et al., 2018), thus linking mitochondria and inflammation. Here, NLRP3 is linked to Parkinson disease.
