RHO and retinal degeneration: A recent study showed that in a mouse model of retinal degeneration induced by a P23H rhodopsin gene mutation, the accumulation of misfolded proteins in retinal photoreceptor cells activated ER stress and excessive autophagy, while inhibition of autophagy via deleting the autophagy-activating gene Atg5 decreased photoreceptor death and improved retinal function (Yao et al., 2018).
