An association between SDB and increased birthweight has been demonstrated recently in women with mild OSA,[44] with a potential explanation relating to an association between increased placental weight and maternal OSA severity, possibly mediated by placental leptin overexpression.[45] Despite no increase in birthweight, we also demonstrated heightened levels of important fetal growth regulators IGF-1 and IGF-2 with a corresponding decrease in IGFBP-2 in normotensive women with SDB. This evidence concerns the gene LEP and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
