First of all, ageing is a major risk factor for both multifactorial degenerative disorders.158 Secondly, extracellular amyloid β‐peptide deposition, the primary pathologic hallmark of AD, is also a component of drusen in AMD.159 Furthermore, both diseases involve several isoforms encoded by different alleles of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene. This evidence concerns the gene APOE and Alzheimer disease.
