In the same family, the bile salt export pump (BSEP, gene symbol ABCB11), which is also located at the canalicular membrane of healthy hepatocytes, has been suggested to be a sensitive and specific marker of HCC [27], whereas the phospholipid translocase MDR3 (gene symbol ABCB4), which is located in the apical membrane of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes, may be a useful marker to discriminate immunohistochemistry, HCC and iCCA from hepatoid carcinomas [28]. This evidence concerns the gene ABCB11 and hepatoid adenocarcinoma.
