SOST and kidney disorder: After being discovered in 2001 as a 22-kD glycoprotein encoded by the SOST gene, which functioned as an osteocyte-derived bone morphogenetic protein and as an antagonist through the Wnt signaling pathway to inhibit differentiation, proliferation, and promote osteoblast apoptosis [26,27], the roles of sclerostin in vascular calcification and clinical outcomes was studied extensively in kidney disease patients [13,14,28,29].
