Very recently, Crippa et al. [31] by analyzing the induction of trilineage determination and tissue-specific genes found that thalassemia MSCs failed to efficiently differentiate into adipocytes and to form bone because of the significantly impaired expression of genes for lipid droplet formation in adipocytes (LPL and FABP4) and genes for bone formation (SPARC and COL1A2). The gene discussed is SPARC; the disease is thalassemia.
