The overall pattern that emerges is of strong tissue- and cancer-specific transcription patterns (remarked on by previous authors [43]), with expression dominated by one to several proviruses, e.g. the Gag protein of 22q11.23 is a potential biomarker for prostate cancer [44] and a potentially oncogenic gene fusion between this provirus and (downstream) the ETV1 (ETS variant 1) transcription factor has been reported [45].
