SOD2 and Stroke: On the one hand, the antioxidant response of astrocytes may save neurons from excessive oxidative stress after stroke: astrocyte‐specific overexpression of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) effectively attenuates nerve damage caused by cerebral ischaemia.140 Hayakawa et al42 found that astrocytes can deliver their own functional mitochondria to neurons directly or indirectly, and blocking this process might aggravate neural damage arising from cerebral ischaemia.
