ESR1 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: Considering that ERα can be co-activated by peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-α (PGC1α), the loss of estrogen signaling, present in postmenopausal women, is possibly linked to reduced PGC1α and associated with liver fat and NAFLD progression, which may explain, at least in part, gender-specific difference in NAFLD development and the increased risk for NAFLD in women after menopause.
