In both papers the authors found a dysregulation in each step of ATRA biosynthesis with significant decreases in the mRNA levels of genes that encode the enzymes for oxidation/reduction of retinol to retinaldehyde (ADH1B, ADH1C, RDHL, AKR1B10 for both cancer types, RDH5 only in colorectal cancer, and ADH4, AKR1B, and RDH12 only in gastric cancer). Here, AKR1B10 is linked to colorectal cancer.
