Astrocyte-specific functions have been identified for a variety of genes known to be causative for PD, including DJ-1, SNCA, PARK1, PARK2, PARK7, PLA2G6, and ATP13A2. These functions include regulation of astrocyte neurotrophic properties and their response to inflammatory stimuli, as well as astrocytic glutamate transport and mitochondrial function (reviewed extensively in Booth et al., 2017). Here, PARK7 is linked to Parkinson disease.
