Although CXCL8 was originally characterized as a leucocyte chemo-attractant, several studies have contributed to demonstrate a pleiotropic role in cancer biology due to its ability to modulate the tumour microenvironment by recruiting inflammatory leukocytes, favouring angiogenesis, modulating the growth and aggressiveness of tumour cell and specifically shielding the cancer stem cell population from the cytotoxic effect of chemotherapeutics.
