Increase in GLUT1 and subsequent increase in glucose uptake has been implicated in providing a “glycolytic” metabolic profile in the lungs and heart in PAH patients from prior studies.21, 22, 23 This effect was more pronounced in proliferating vascular cells in PAH rats,22 and inhibition of GLUT1 expression has been demonstrated to reverse Warburg effect as well,23 making it a novel therapeutic target. This evidence concerns the gene SLC2A1 and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
