The rates of hypoglycemia-related ED visits and hospitalizations were lowest among patients treated with medications other than sulfonylurea or insulin (0.74 [95% CI, 0.53-0.96] per 1000 persons per year) and increased with the addition of sulfonylurea, basal insulin, and basal plus bolus insulin regimens to 5.75 (95% CI, 5.08-6.42), 12.39 (95% CI, 10.22-14.56), and 36.11 (95% CI, 33.61-38.61) per 1000 persons per year, respectively (Table and Figure 1F).
