Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM, also known as CD326) represents a good candidate for an EV biomarker as it is overexpressed in many human adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas (Went et al., 2004), and this expression closely correlates with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) regulating tumor invasion and metastasis (Gao et al., 2015; Ye et al., 2015; Sankpal et al., 2017). The gene discussed is EPCAM; the disease is squamous cell carcinoma.
