Recently, Reaven et al. reported significant reduction in cardiovascular risk using SGLT2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists [4, 30], concluding that approaches beyond glycemic control (such as body weight reduction) represent important strategies for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events and death among populations with type 2 diabetes [31]. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
