IL-1β rs1143634 has long been reported as a risk factor in the progression of periodontitis.15–19 However, some studies do not support such an association,20,21 especially in aggressive periodontitis.22 Recent meta-analyses demonstrated that the IL-1β rs1143634 polymorphism is associated with periodontitis.23,24 Individuals with IL-1β rs1143634 also show high levels of IL-1β in the GCF,25 which adds to the evidence that IL-1β rs1143634 might be a genetic risk factor for periodontitis. This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and periodontitis.
