Mabuchi et al. demonstrated that polymorphism of the optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) gene, which encodes a dynamin-related mitochondrial protein, was related to the pathology of OAG.[43] Additionally, we previously showed that mitochondrial DNA damage in blood cells, represented by an increased mitochondrial/nuclear DNA (mtDNA/nDNA) ratio, was associated with abnormal BF (MBR) in the ONH in glaucoma patients.[44] Taking these past results together with those of this study, it is thus reasonable to consider that systemic mitochondrial dysfunction influences hemodynamics in the ONH. Here, OPA1 is linked to glaucoma.
