SCID/bg nude mice injected with HepG2 cells following knockdown of β-catenin by siRNA had no effect on tumor formation, whereas knockdown of LRP5/6 led to significantly smaller tumor volume (Additional file 1: Figure S2), suggesting a β-catenin-independent role of LRP5/6 in regulating HepG2 cell proliferation.
