G6PD and malaria: Additionally, if we looked at the association of G6PD deficiency and malaria susceptibility, the studies were more inconsistent, showing that G6PD deficiency was protective in heterozygous females (Bienzle, Ayeni, Lucas, & Luzzatto, 1972; Bienzle, Guggenmoos‐Holzmann, & Luzzatto, 1979; Clark et al., 2008; Ruwende et al., 1995) or had no effect on the susceptibility to uncomplicated malaria in either hemizygous males or heterozygous females (Enevold et al., 2005).
