EGFR and squamous cell carcinoma: Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCAC), has been associated with many risk factors, most importantly with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 The HPV‐associated E5 protein amplifies the mitogenic signals through the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) which is broadly expressed in squamous cell carcinomas such as those from anogenital tract and oropharynx.15, 16, 17 Panitumumab and cetuximab are currently the two monoclonal anti‐EGFR antibodies more widely developed in the clinic.
