miR-126 has atheroprotective properties under normal homeovascular conditions, suppressing the inflammatory cascade and mediating leukocyte adherence in atherosclerosis by decreasing VCAM-1 expression [128] and inhibiting Sprouty related EVH1 domain containing 1 (SPRED1) and phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 2 (PIK3R2), inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)A signalling [129].
