Competitive inhibition of this transporter may occur when multiple substrates are present.31 Several studies have found sex‐specific effects of SLCO1B1 genetic variants on the efficacy of statin treatment.32, 33 Increased risk of statin‐related myopathy is associated with female sex, particularly among carriers of the SLCO1B1 c.521C allele, suggesting that competition for transporters may result in clinically significant drug‐hormone interactions.34 In addition, there may be sex differences in transporter expression.35 Here, SLCO1B1 is linked to myopathy.
