Second, genetic studies identified several cholesterol-related genes (CETP, ABCA1, LIPC, LPL, VLDLR, LRP6, and APOE, which encodes apolipoprotein E) as risk factors for AMD and suggested that these gene effects are independent of plasma lipid profiles [7,8,9,10,11]. The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
