Downregulation of SLC16A10 observed in our patients may suggest a decrease in uptake and secretion of thyroid hormones (Friesema et al., 2008), mimicking hypothyroidism, the condition associated with other atherosclerosis risk factors like elevated blood pressure and increased levels of LDL, cholesterol, C-reactive protein, and homocysteine (Ichiki, 2010). This evidence concerns the gene SLC16A10 and atherosclerosis.
