In addition to innumerable studies linking the expression of Stromelysin-3 to the invasive and/or anti-apoptotic characteristics of tumor cells (reviewed in [14]), orthologs of Mmp11 have emerged as important effectors of matrix remodeling during amphibian metamorphosis, in which context it functions in the remodeling of the basement membrane lining the intestinal tract [15,16,17,18,19].
