This study with H1975 cells provided the in vitro molecular target to identify the pyrimidine‐based compound (osimertinib) which was active in patients with acquired resistance to EGFR‐TKIs.36, 42 Combined, this study which began and was fueled by studies on the lung tumor cell lines, led to routine testing for EGFR mutations in patients with non‐squamous NSCLC lung cancer and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of five different drugs for patients with EGFR mutations, gefitinib, erlotinib, afatinib, dacomitinib, and osimertinib. Here, EGFR is linked to lung cancer.
