Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) family member—syndecan-2 (SDC2), a membrane-anchored proteoglycan, was found to be expressed on high levels in brain tumor tissues, including gliomas, whereas never found in NSCs (Watanabe et al., 2006; Theocharis et al., 2010). This evidence concerns the gene CD44 and central nervous system cancer.
