ECE1 and infective vaginitis: Recent findings from experimental mouse models of vaginal infection by C. albicans (MVC) provide direct evidence that both secretory aspartyl proteinases (Sap, in particular SAP2 and SAP6) and ECE1-derived toxin, candidalysin, can trigger the signaling cascade causing NLRP3 inflammasome activation in VEC (Bruno et al., 2015; Pericolini et al., 2015; Richardson et al., 2018b; Rogiers et al., 2019).
