To investigate whether these effects on differential Rab5 expression were related to the clearance of the bacteria in the late phase (4–6 h after infection with bacteria as shown in Figures 1C–F; Supplementary Figures 1A,B), we pretreated macrophages with wortmannin (Supplementary Figure 3C), an inhibitor of the PI3K/Akt pathway, which modulates Rab5 recruitment to phagosomes (26).
