In combination with a high-fat high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet, the heterozygous Ldlr (Ldlr+/−) hamsters showed marked hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia as early as 1 week after feeding, and time-dependently increased atherosclerotic lesions in aorta from 2 to 4 months [6,7]. Here, LDLR is linked to familial hypercholesterolemia.
