L1CAM and neoplasm: L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) is a 200–220-kDa type I membrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family and has an important function in development of the nervous system by regulating cell adhesion and migration.3–6 L1CAM is also important for adhesion and migration of tumour cells,7–9 and the oncogenic activity of L1CAM has been demonstrated experimentally in various malignancies.10,11
