At study entry, 9 of the 18 patients being heterozygous for BAFF-var (50%) had a proteinuria occurring in the context of renal manifestation of SLE that was higher than 0.3 g per 1 mg urine-creatinine, whereas only 51 (29%) of the 177 SLE patients without the BAFF-var allele had proteinuria (p = 0.03; OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 0.9–6.4) (Table 3). The gene discussed is TNFSF13B; the disease is systemic lupus erythematosus.
