In the light of the high abundance in many viperid snake venoms of PLA2-like toxins devoid of enzymatic activity, but capable of inducing myonecrosis, our findings underscore that Varespladib is not only effective in the inhibition of catalytically-active toxic PLA2s, but also of these PLA2-like proteins, hence expanding the potential therapeutic usefulness of this inhibitor. The gene discussed is PLA2G2A; the disease is gas gangrene.
