The formation of neovascularization in AMD is a complex process involving multiple signaling pathways mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, transforming growth factor, the Wnt pathway, the NLRP3 inflammasome, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, interleukins and chemokines [6,7,8,9,10]. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
