Finally, DNA methylation at the PHOSPHO1 (phosphoethanolamine/phosphocholine phosphatase 1) locus in blood cells has been previously linked to decreased type 2 diabetes mellitus risk, which goes in line with the well-known antidiabetic activity of metformin and metformin-evoked downregulation of PHOSPHO1 observed in this study[41].
