VEGFA and breast carcinoma: Particularly in breast cancer, the induction of a proangiogenic phenotype by calcitriol is supported by its ability to stimulate the expression of proangiogenic molecules such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and cathelicidin, and to inhibit the angiogenesis inhibitor thrombospondin-1 [18,19], suggesting a differential effect of calcitriol depending on the tumor type.
