Increased circulating serum levels of REG1A are manifested across different types of diabetes including type 1 (T1D) (Astorri et al., 2010; Bacon et al., 2012), maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) (Astorri et al., 2010; Bacon et al., 2012) and type 2 (T2D) (Yang et al., 2015) indicative of β-cell apoptosis.
