Cldn16 deficient mice exhibited hypomagnesia and hypercalciuria and a low urinary pH but did not show nephrocalcinosis which could be explained by the upregulation of several genes (e.g., Trpm6, Trpv5, Cnnm2) involved in calcium and magnesium transport or the altered pH. The gene discussed is CLDN16; the disease is nephrocalcinosis.
