Since the IGF pathway plays an essential role in early mammary gland growth and development as well as later-life breast tissue involution [23] and overstimulation of the IGF axis plays a promoting role in breast cancer development [24], we proposed that the profound breast cancer protective effect of HDP associated with inheritance of the IGF1R SNP rs2016347 TT genotype might be explained by and associated with increased breast tissue involution, manifested as lower TDLU counts.
