Impaired iron levels by low consumption of iron and inflammation are the major stimulus to hepcidin release from hepatic tissue, and acute-phase protein, which is responsible to inhibit ferroportin expressed in the duodenal enterocyte, hepatocyte, and macrophage intestinal decreasing iron absorption and macrophage iron release from senescent erythrocytes increasing the risk to anemia in athletes [28, 30, 31]. This evidence concerns the gene HAMP and anemia (phenotype).
