The SLC1A1 and SLC6A6 genes, which encode for the neuronal/epithelial high-affinity glutamate transporter (EAAT3/EAAC1) and taurine transporter, respectively, are down-regulated by the miR-96 cluster (miR-96, miR-182, miR-183) in MSA brain tissues and MSA mouse models, indicating a role for miRNAs in neurotransmitter release (Ubhi et al., 2014). Here, SLC6A6 is linked to multiple system atrophy.
