Using a rat model of coronary artery occlusion, Deodato and colleagues showed that an intravenous injection of 1 mg/ kg genistein after five minutes reduced myocardial necrosis, regarding both the necrotic area and serum and macrophages levels of TNF-α, and blunted intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression in the injured myocardium and also decreased of serum creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) activity, decreased occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias, and increased myocardial contractility.
